Slow-cooked, Water-fry Onions

A technique of frying onions without oil or fat

Prep Time 5 minutes

Total Time 1 hour 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 Medium Purple Onions
  • 1 Tbspn Water

Instructions

  1. Slice or dice your onions as desired for your recipe and add to pan

  2. Add 1 Tbspn water, or enough to stop the onions from sticking to the pan.

Recipe Notes

This style of preparing onions requires a pan with a good fitting lid.  The process is slowly and gently cooking the onions in there own moisture, making them sweet and sticky.

Water in this technique is only used to prevent the onions from sticking to the pan.  If you accidentally add too much water, remove the lid and let the excess liquid evaporate.

The end result will be a pan of soft sticky sweet onions that are a very flavourful base to any dish without the use of fat or oil.
